Why is a single price per square metre not enough?
Overall dimensions and sheet area explain only part of the cost. A panel with many small holes takes different cutting time from a plain rectangle of the same size. Grooves, pockets, edge profiles and three-dimensional reliefs need separate toolpaths. An accurate quote requires the part drawing.
Key details that affect the quotation
- Material type, thickness and who will supply it.
- Cutting length, holes, tight corners and operations at different depths.
- Total quantity, number of different parts and sheet layout.
- Critical dimensions, visible surfaces and installation requirements.
- Packaging, delivery method and target date.
Larger quantities can spread preparation costs across more parts, while a greater number of designs and frequent tool changes can increase production time. A production-run discount or fixed lead time therefore cannot be confirmed before we review the file.
Material and waste calculation
Tool clearance between parts, edge workholding allowances, grain direction and sheet defects affect the usable area. Adding up part areas alone does not determine how many sheets to buy. For customer-supplied sheets, provide actual dimensions, surface condition and the usable face in advance. Returning leftover material can also be included in the order scope.
Compare quotations on the same basis
Compare whether material is included, the scope of drawing preparation and revisions, post-cutting processes and transport arrangements. Comparing totals directly can be misleading if one quotation covers cutting alone while another also includes material and packaging. Specify additional requirements such as painting, coating or installation separately.
Prepare and send your file
Preferably send a dimensioned DXF or DWG drawing, or STL for three-dimensional work. Include units, the quantity of each part and material thickness.
